A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
